This was an interesting piece. I am not sure the level of randomness of the sample though based on the source of the survey administration. While the source should ultimately not matter, the very mention of it would have a tendency to skew the results in a way to make them invalid. We will see what this actually means in the vote on March 18. This follows up on information I posted here and here this week.
Statewide poll shows strong majority support for civil unions in PA
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
March 6, 2008
Harrisburg (PA) – The Value All Families Coalition today released recent polling data that showed that by a margin of 65 % to 27% Pennsylvanians support civil unions for gay and lesbian couples. Pennsylvanians understand the distinction between civil unions and marriage for same-sex couples and expect their elected officials to do so as well. This polling data undermines the main argument offered by the proponents of the Pennsylvania Marriage Protection Amendment, Senate Bill 1250.

I've encountered very conservative individuals, some who are self-described fundimentalists, who were quite willing to go along with the notion of a "civil union" for same sex couples. It seems that the term "mariage" may be of more concern than the actual facts of the relationship. While this sort of compromise would still be a deprciation of same-sex relationships, it would give some of the more regressive elements a little breathing room to get used to the idea and catch up with the more progressive attitudes.

I think that right Alan. The term marriage itself carries too much baggage as it is. The problem is that the term conflates the civil union with the religious ceremony. I think the two should be separate terms. Once we can get a better handle on what those both mean, then we have room to evolve a little faster.
