The primary problem in all of Scripture all the way through is idolatry. It is the confusion of that which is an object that points to, symbolizes, or mediates God with God. Another way to look at it is that as early as the fall in Genesis, it is not rebellion as much as not recognizing God as God but God as something that is not God. This runs through the Deuteronomic history on through to Jesus and Paul to Revelation.
So Jim posted a bit on the confusion or collusion between the duty of the church to respond to and proclaim Christ and such ideas, even good ones, like environmentalism, human rights, etc. Idolatry does not have to be a bad thing at face value. In fact, good things and noble causes can be idolatry as well. These just happen to be deceptive forms of idolatry or, as John refers to it in his letters, "other Gospels". This is the Anti-Christ. Not something overtly evil and heinous, but something that seems to be like Christ, but is in fact not. So it got me thinking about what the top sources of idolatry are in today's world. Here is my stab at it (in no order, but I would be interested to hear what the top ones in order are for you).
- Prosperity gospel
- Spiritualism
- Environmentalism
- Multiculturalism
- Sexuality
- The Bible
- Christian doctrine
- Jouissance
- Politics
- Jesus as a popular figure
So what do you think? I thought this would be a fine sermon series for the summer… If I happened to be a pastor which I am not
But I will break this out if I am called to do a little pulpit supply.
