Revdarth posted a review of Through a Screen Darkly and followed it with an interesting list to add to the listmania that is the blogosphere o' fun. He says:
It did get me thinking as I finished last night about my “transcendent” film experiences. … (E)ach were ones that left me sitting there, as the credits rolled, feeling like I had experienced something I had not before.
So of course that got me thinking too. Here is my list o' films that I could not and cannot really shake. You will notice a lot of parity between my list and Ed's. We watched many a film together at seminary and share an almost identical taste. Though I think I have an overall darker sense of transcendent film experience. And more off-beat.
- Blade Runner
- 12 Monkeys
- Schindler's List
- Saving Private Ryan
- Platoon
- The Shining
- Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
- 21 Grams
- Mulholland Dr.
- The Matrix
- The Cell
- One Hour Photo
- Vanilla Sky
- O Brother Where Art Thou?
- Children of Men
- Alien
- American Psycho
- Eraserhead
- Sunshine
- Donnie Darko
- Punch Drunk Love
(I have not yet seen Crash, Magnolia, No Country for Old Men, or There Will Be Blood. My kids have other ideas for what to do with my time these days!)
If you put me in a room with just these movies to watch over and over again, I would thank you!

I think we have similar taste in movies. And No Country for Old Men was good, but the end left unsatisfied. To your list I think I'd have to add:
▪ Primal Fear (Edward Norton; Richard Gere)
▪ Seven (Morgan Freeman; Brad Pitt)
▪ Frailty (Matthew McConaughy; Bill Paxton)
▪ Kids (Leo Fitzpatrick; Roasrio Dawson)
▪ The Sixth Sense (Bruce Willis; Haley Joel Osment)
▪ Freeway (Reece Witherspoon; Keifer Sutherland)
▪ The Doom Generation (Rose McGowan)
▪ Identity (John Cusak; Ray Liota)
▪ 8MM (Nicholas Cage; Joquin Phoenix)
▪ The Butterfly Effect (Ashton Kutcher; Amy Smart)

Seven is great. And Fight Club messed with me for a while too! But I only left one Brad Pitt movie in there lest someone accuse me of man love for him
But he seriously does make great movies as does Christian Bale.

When you referred to Sunshine in the comments on revdarth, were you referring to Eternal Sunshine?

No dude. This film. Awesome and visually stunning. I love sci-fi from indie studios (which I guess includes Searchlight).

nice call on punch drunk love. pt anderson is brilliant, and personally i think that's his best work (though you certainly need to check out magnolia and there will be blood as soon as possible).

Blade runner is one movie that is much better than the novel it came from.
I enjoy films, but I don't find too much in the way of transendent experiences.
* Any movie by Akira Kurosawa. The Seven Samurai, The Hidden Fortress and the Four Outlaws, Rashomon, Stray Dog, Yojimbo, Life, the list just goes on and on!
* 2001 A Space Odyessy
* Dr. Strangelove
* Wise Blood (A man that has a good car don't need no redemption!)
* Everything you wanted to know about sex but were afrade to ask. I include this because the concept of taking a book like that and turning it into a movie is just so out-of-the-box.
My list is a bit older than yours. Older…but Wiser? Nah!
