Five Albums I Listened to A Lot This Week

Down III: Over the Under - Down

I love the production of this album.  The drum tracks sound great with some of the heaviest kick I have heard.  This album has a Kyuss kind of sludginess that I love.  It’s really heavy, but very accessible.  “On March the Saints” makes me want to move to New Awlins.

Cease to Begin - Band of Horses

Even though from Seattle (originally) Band of Horses sounds like what much of the Canadian indies scene has produced in recent years.  They have a twang, but with a sufficient amount of psychadelia to bring the slight country leanings back to indie land.  This album has a gorgeous range of textures to it.

Fleet Foxes - Fleet Foxes

Something must be in the water in Seattle these days.  This is kind of a throwback sound reminiscent of Brian Wilson.  It’s both trippy and infectious.  The vocal sound is impeccable on every track.  They even look like they belong in 1971.

And the Glass Handed Kites - Mew

Even though the way they draw their band name looks like Amharic script, these guys are Dutch.  It progressive-ish with a big drum sound, a lot of elements going on and each song seems to blend into the next.  If the world needed more power trios, these frengers make a very unique mark with this album.

Fox Confessor Brings the Flood - Neko Case

Her voice is so crystal clear and passionate on this album.  Her voice makes me melt.  I like her in front and out of the background role she often plays with The New Pornographers.  Her vocal talent and song writing prowess are truly magnificent on this album.  If you are having a bad day, this album can change that with one listen.
