Five Albums on a Desert Island…

If you could take only five albums with you to a desert island for a year, what would they be?

Welcome to my eclectic jungle.

  • Radiohead – OK Computer
    • It is a sublimely constructed piece that seamlessly fits each song together.  Nothing is quite as brilliant in form from the 1990's save Ladies and Gentlemen… by Spiritualized.
  • Pink Floyd – Dark Side of the Moon
    • Because I have a penchant for space rock this is the source and still moves me.  I almost cannot bear listening to any of the tracks unless in the company of all the others.
  • Miles Davis – Kind of Blue
    • This is the birth of the cool.  If we mix blues and bop, this is the origin of it all.  A sick lineup made something with depth and it's so damn chill.
  • Meshuggah – Catch 33
    • I need heavy music and nothing is as abstract, strange, and mesmerizing as this one.  Great for those really late nights where exhaustion becomes the best narcotic one could intake.
  • Neville Brothers – Live on Planet Earth
    • This is a funky zydeco with all the right fixins' for a soulful New 'Awlins music gumbo.  These guys bring the soul, the funk, and the party all at once.

And that's just what I would bring today!

So what would you bring with you?

Not tagging anyone in particular, but I would be interested to see what you think!

  • Off the top of my head (today):

    • Talk Talk - Spirit of Eden
    • Rubén Blades - Mundo
    • Talk Talk - Laughing Stock
    • Erik Satie - Complete Piano Works
    • Jaco Pastorius - Word of Mouth

    Kid A
    Kind of Blue
    Brahms 2nd
Wish You Were Here - Pink Floyd
Ju Ju - Sioux Sioux and the Banshees because there's some metaphysical teaching, I dunno what, about "Into the Light".
  • That would be Siouxsie, and she was great in the 80's.

Why take anything to disturb the sound of silence, the songs of birds, sea and trees? If I really had to I'd take the Sex Pistols, Split Enz, David Bowie, Mozart and Elgar's Cello Concerto. But desert islands are for peace and quiet - the bliss of isolation.
  • Blake
This is quite possibly the most difficult question to answer, ever. But I'll go ahead and take a stab at it anyway.

    1) Shearwater - Palo Santo
    2) Spoon - Kill The Moonlight
    3) The Decemberists - The Crane Wife
    4) mewithoutYou - Brother, Sister
    5) Paulson - All At Once

HM: Brand New - The Devil And God Are Raging Inside Me, This Will Destroy You - Young Mountain, Radiohead - In Rainbows, Minus The Bear - Planet Of Ice, Dredg - El Cielo, Bishop Allen - The Broken String

These albums are, of course, interchangeable with a million others. Impossible question to answer, but fun to try.
  • Good choices. Planet of Ice and El Cielo are interesting. I thought about that Dredg album in particular, especially since Catch without Arms so kind of disappointing. I have never gotten the vibe of either The Decemberists or Spoon (or TV on the Radio). I am less folk and more space.

Ya know, I don't know what it is about Spoon. Every album of theirs I've listened to I was "meh" about at first, but after repeated listens I grew to love each of them. Go figure.

I don't listen to a ton of heavy music, but one album I think I'd include on the list, in retrospect, would be Between The Buried And Me - Colors. It's a very diverse album, as far as heavy music goes.

Also, I'm not sure if this album would fall under your definition of space-rock (seems to be a pretty diverse genre), but In Reverent Fear put out a wonderful album a couple of years ago called Stomacher. Definitely worth checking out.
  • I'm with you on the first two. I'd also add Faithless -- Sunday 8pm, Bjork – Debut and probably Sgt Pepper's for a more upbeat classic
  • I was going to put both Revolver and Sticky Fingers there, but I feel like I need both to be truly happy. If I listen to one, I need to listen to he other like moth to flame.

    1)Slayer-Reign in Blood
-Most people would say Metallica's Master of Puppets is the #1 thrash album of all time. I would have to disagree. It's a close call, as I love that album as well. Slayer perfected and upped the stakes with this one album. And Dave Lombardo would raise the bar for drummers with the "double-bass break" shot heard around-the-world in "Angel of Death."
    2)Herbie Hancock- Thrust
The best thing he ever recorded with the Headhunters band....also the funkiest.
    3)Purple Rain-Prince
    -nuff said.
4)Led Zeppelin IV- Is this the best Zeppelin album? Not sure. But it does have a good representation of how dynamic that band was. I like how it is paced. Good song order and some of their best songs.
5)Kid A- The only way to follow a masterpiece is to do something completely different and unexpected. There is something completely unsettling about this album from start to finish. But its amazing.
  • I am there with you with Kid A for sure. Like Dark Side, I am compelled to listen to the whole thing. Reign in Blood is the best thrash album. The whole thing set the bar for everyone and redefined a nascent genre as it was.
