John McCain was getting laughter from some audiences last night. They were not "laughing with" him, but "laughing at" him for his demeanor, continued references to Joe the Plumber, and his visible lack of comfort and poise during the "debate".
That combined with Obama's continued advance in connectivity with the general populace and the ability to make people "feel good" about him is a double-whammy on McCain's success.
"Perhaps most significant was Obama’s success in reassuring voters that he understands who they are and what matters to them. He went from a 16-point to a 24-point advantage on “Is he on your side?” and made similar gains on the question of whether he would “bring the right kind of change,” from a 18 to 38-point advantage. And while the two candidates were even on the question of “who shares your values?” at the beginning of the debate, Obama held a 24-point lead by the end."
Undecideds Laughing At, Not With, McCain – Swampland – TIME.
As much as I disagree with him on how liberal the "mainstream media" is (he overemphasizes liberal leaning and ignores contrary research e.g. here and here), Bill O'Reilly does make some good points. The point he makes is that McCain had the opportunity to harness the negative energy towards the direction of the economy and address it directly, and he clearly did not. Instead he focused an attack on Obama bringing up the guilt by association refrains. the fallout proves that Americans who sit in the middle and most of the independents are not seeing this kind of politicking as helpful or encouraging. At this point, it is laughable.
Obama did not have to do much last night and he did not. He kept a boring even-keeled tone and "managed the game". Obama has a nice lead at the end of the contest and is going to protect it by keeping to the game plan. McCain will continue to foul him in order to stop the clock a few times in these last seconds. But it's just not going to work at this point since his shot has been off every time.
